The ultraright former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro confirmed his support for former US president Donald Trump ahead of the presidential elections in the United States that will take place in two weeks. During a press conference in São Paulo, Bolsonaro expressed his support for Trump, mentioning the global repercussions of Trump's departure from the presidency.
At the press conference, Bolsonaro highlighted the support he received from Trump during the 2022 presidential elections in Brazil, in which he was defeated by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Despite not being in power, Bolsonaro and Trump have maintained a close relationship and ideological affinity.
The former Brazilian president praised a compatriot who recently asked Trump during a campaign event at a McDonald's restaurant to prevent the United States from becoming "a Brazil." After the video surfaced on social media, Bolsonaro revealed that he spoke on the phone with the woman, who is a firearms instructor in the US.
In contrast, Bolsonaro criticized Lula for allegedly forming alliances with dictatorial regimes such as China, Russia, and Venezuela, and implicating Israel. He stated that Lula has attacked Israel, a country that Bolsonaro considers an ally, especially following the Israeli offensive in Gaza in the past.
On the other hand, Bolsonaro has made it clear that he distances himself from Nicolás Maduro's government in Venezuela, whose electoral victory has been questioned and not recognized by the former Brazilian president. Bolsonaro's position towards the dictators in the region is clear, while he maintains his support for allies like Israel amidst complex diplomatic relations in the region.
